Bachtel being the most beautiful viewpoint of the Zurich Oberland is a mountain of the Appenzell Alps and located between Hinwil and Wald in the canton of Zurich. It lies approximately halfway between the Schnebelhorn and Lake Zurich. On the summit is the Bachtel Tower, a 60 metres tall radio tower and a restaurant, the Bachel-Kulm.
Today’s Bachtel lookout tower was built in 1986 and is 75 meters high. A viewing platform at 30 meters above ground offers beautiful views of Lake Zurich, the Linth Plain, the foothills of the Alps and the Alpstein mountain range.
The first wooden tower built on the Bachtel in 1873 was destroyed by a storm in 1890. In 1893 it was replaced by a steel lattice tower which was removed in 1985 because it was not suitable as an aerial mast. It was reconstructed on the Pfannenstiel where it still stands today. An information panel with the names and outlines of the mountains visible from the Bachtel tower was installed on the viewing platform. In good weather the views range from Bachtel mountain to the north all the way to the Black Forest.
The path up to the Bachtel is the adventure
One of the many ways to the top of the Bachtel starts in Gibswil (municipality Fischenthal) and takes about 3 1/2 hours leading past the Wissengubel. In a semicircular rock basin there is a romantic picnic spot and behind a waterfall, there is a large rock gap to discover (bring a flashlight with you!). Once you made it to the top, an unsurpassable panorama awaits the exhausted hiker. On dark nights, street and house lighting turns into magically flickering light installations. Downhill, the hike goes back via Sennenberg to Gibswil.
