Piz Nair (3,056 meters above sea level) is a mountain of the Albula Alps in Switzerland, overlooking St. Moritz in the canton of Graubünden. The peak is easily accessible from the village with a funicular and a cable car, the upper station unloads 30 metres below the summit. Below the summit to the east is the Corviglia ski area.
The symbol of Piz Nair
A colony of ibex called the base of Piz Nair their home for decades, ‘licking’ the salt off the seating of tower 2; some of them still return to visit Piz Nair. With that story in mind, Zurich artist Rosemarie Grieder has modelled a life-like ibex in 1956. Eventually, financier Stavros Niarchos asked her to create a much larger replica for the summit of Piz Nair.
The ibex ‘Guardiaun Grischun’ became the symbol of Piz Nair and is enthroning St. Moritz, enjoying the breathtaking view over the Engadine since 1958: To the south with a view on the Bernina mountain groupt, the Margna-, Forno- and Bergeller alps, the Monte della Disgrazia, and to the north / north east with Aela, Kesch, the Stammer- and Zugspitze, Grossvenediger and to the Wildspitze. If the sight turns to the western side, there is the Piz Julier and the Monte Rosa peak, and with a good visibility one can even see the famous Matterhorn. Taking a view to east there are the peaks of Ortler, Marmolada, Presanello, Ademello etc.
