A cherry blossom is the flower of any of several trees of genus Prunus, particularly the Japanese cherry, Prunus Serrulata which is called SAKURA after the Japanese 桜 or 櫻. Currently it is widely distributed, especially in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere including Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, West Siberia, Iran, and Afghanistan.
Along with the chrysanthemum, the cherry blossom is considered the national flower of Japan. Many of the varieties that have been cultivated for ornamental use do not produce fruit. Edible cherries generally come from cultivars of the related species Prunus Avium and Prunus Cerasus.
Sakura (“cherry blossom”) is currently also one of the most popular names for girls in Japan. Up until recently, it was rarely used as a name, because cherry blossoms fall quickly from the tree and it was felt to be a bad omen that the child would die young.
However, it became highly fashionable in the 1990’s and remains very popular. Japanese parents like it because it has strong, romantic associations with Japanese culture & tradition, yet it’s rarely used by older generations so it sounds youthful and fresh.
