The Höchhand (1,314 m) is a mountain of the Appenzell Alps, located north of Goldingen in the canton of St. Gallen offering beautiful views of Lake Zurich, the Linth plain, the foothills of the Alps and the Alpstein mountain range.
The starting point of this hike is the Zürcher Höhenklinik Wald in Faltigberg at 900 m above sea level. It was originally built up here to cure lung patients in the healthy mountain air. Depending on the visibility, you can already enjoy the beautiful view of the Linth plain (or a sea of fog…:-)
You may first walk past the Schwarzenberg around the Höchhand and climb from behind over the ridge path, which offers a short, but steep rocky spot and also gives a slight “mountain feeling” with the white-red-white marked hiking trails (for snow and ice, it is recommended to choose a different route!)
For the way back to the Zürcher Höhenklinik Wald, you may then choose the path over the Schwarzenberg to the Farneralp, where there’s the possibility to warm – or freshen – up in the restaurant.
